GAME STORIES: Playoffs – Week 4
Game of the Week voting for Saturday’s state semifinal action came down the wire this week between North Stafford and James Monroe in our closest vote yet. The Wolverines (59 votes) narrowly edging out the Yellow Jackets in the voting. The action on the field was just as tight for both of these teams. (59) Lake Taylor 23, North Stafford 21: North Stafford jumped out to an early lead only to see their guests rally to tie the game in the third quarter. The Wolverines went back ahead in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t meant to be as the Titans scored twice late to escape with a win.

(19) Briar Woods 45, Courtland 15: A 17-9 halftime margin slipped away from Courtland, as two-time defending Division 4 state champion Briar Woods rattled off 28-unanswered points in the second half to clinch a spot in the state championship game next Saturday against Heritage-Lynchburg.

(57) James Monroe 37, Kettle Run 30 (3OT): James Monroe used a late TD to force overtime where the teams matched scores in the first 2 extra periods. The Yellow Jackets reached the end zone in the 3rd and then the defense came up with a huge to secure JM’s second straight state final berth.

(5) Essex 40, John Battle 9: Essex QB Dominek Broaddus tossed 5 TD passes to set a new all-classifications VHSL state record for TD passes in a season as the Trojans cruised to their first state final appearance since winning it all in 2009.
