A CLOSER LOOK: Courtland at Briar Woods

GROUP AA, DIVISION 4 SEMIFINALS

COURTLAND (9-4) AT BRIAR WOODS (13-0)

PLAYERS TO WATCH

BRIAR WOODS

Junior quarterback Trace McSorley

He’s guided the Falcons since he was a freshman and has been sterling from the beginning. The steady leader rarely makes mistakes. He’s completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,294 yards, 31 touchdowns and just five interceptions this season.

COURTLAND

Sophomore fullback Anton Jenkins

If the Cougars are going to have much success offensively it will likely come from the ground game in their Wing-T offense. Jenkins is 6-foot, 215 pounds and has the ability to carry defenders with him. He’s rushed for 841 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“Everybody said Alabama was unbeatable. Everybody said Oregon was unbeatable. Everybody gets knocked off eventually. Everybody’s got to go sooner or later.”-Courtland senior linebacker Zack Braswell on the Cougars’ chances against the undefeated Falcons.

ETC

*Courtland has five rushers with at least 200 yards this season and three with at least 500.

*Briar Woods linebacker and South Carolina commit Matt Rolin is out for the playoffs with a knee injury.

*Courtland last lost the last three state semifinals it has played in. The Cougars’ last state playoff victory is a 28-7 win over Tabb in1989.

*Briar Woods is on a 27-game winning streak and is 30-3 overall in the past three years. The Falcons have five shutout victories this season, including four of their past six opponents.
