The Gridiron Blog brings you the scores, stats and stories from Fredericksburg-area high school football.
Steve Dials, a former Spotsylvania football coach and athletic director, has died
Dials died Wednesday night at home after a long illness. He was 60 years old. He was a football coach at Spotsylvania before becoming the school’s athletic director. He retired from that post in 2004, but his retirement did not last long.
He was hired as a guidance counselor at Fredericksburg Christian School, where he was instrumental in creating the Eagles’ first football team. He was an assistant coach to Tim Coleman during FCS’ first season in 2009.
I just got off the phone with Coleman, who said the Eagles have already ordered “SD” initials to wear on their helmets in honor of Dials this season. I’ll have a longer story about Dials’ impact in tomorrow’s Free Lance-Star.
The Dials family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. The funeral will be held on Saturday at Encounter Church of God.
