UNDER THE LIGHTS (video series) Part I

This is the first installment of a weekly feature here at The Gridiron.

Under the Lights will be a video series that introduces you to the people who play a big role in Friday night football but do not actually wear helmets. I’ll bring you stories about cheerleaders, band members, announcers, trainers, and hopefully even referees. 

And a big, fluffy mascot seemed like the perfect place to start. Meet Gabriel Pierson, a junior at James Monroe who wears the Yellow Jacket costume. It was heartwarming to see the way children gravitated toward Pierson on Monday night, wide-eyed and awestruck. If I have children, I might get a mascot costume of my own to ensure that they always like me.

Here’s a brief interview with Gabriel followed by footage of him in action. (And I’m sorry “under the lights” doesn’t actually seem to be under any lights. Will fix next time!)
