Spotsylvania County schools staff have been driving back roads all day to check the conditions to decide whether to open school on Friday, or possibly open with a delay, schools spokeswoman Rene Daniels said.
She said Superintendent Scott Baker is also considering tonight’s and tomorrow’s weather forecasts. He hopes to reach a decision this evening.
Many back roads remained unplowed when school staff toured the county. Sub-freezing temperatures tonight – possibly in the teens – could make for icy conditions in the morning and a dangerous trip for school buses.
In addition, some forecasts are calling for another dusting of snow Friday afternoon.
As of today, students have missed three days of instruction because of bad weather. All three will be made up.
Students missed Oct. 29 and 30 for Superstorm Sandy. Those days will be made up on Feb. 8 and 18.
Today’s snow day will be made up on March 1.
The division has five make-up days built into the instructional calendar. If students miss two more days, they will be made up on March 15 and April 19. Any days missed beyond the five don’t get made up.
