State senator’s bill prompted by sports fee
State Sen. Bryce Reeves is proposing legislation to allow schools to sell ads on buses and school property as The Free Lance-Star says in a story today. Reeves, who represents Spotsylvania, said his proposal was motivated by the sports participation fee implemented by the county school division in the 2010-11 school year.
However, Spotsylvania School Board policy already allows schools to raise money by placing banners that promote businesses in gyms, on sports fields and on fences. The division’s Athletics Task Force is currently gathering information about what’s being done at each school to develop consistency in pricing and opportunities for banners, schools spokeswoman René Daniels said Monday.
The task force expects to present its information to the School Board within the next few months, Daniels said.
School buses are governed by state law, which doesn’t currently allow ads.
