Hoops event to benefit local educators has begun
The benefit basketball game at Massaponax High School has begun.
The boys’ teams from Massaponax and Spotsylvania High are playing in a contest to benefit Len and Christy Carlson, educators who work at those two schools.
Len Carlson, a physical education teacher, is head coach of the Spotsylvania team. His wife, Christy Bagby Carlson, teaches physical education at Massaponax and serves as an athletic trainer.
Their Caroline County home was ravaged by an early morning fire on Friday. The community has been reaching out to provide help since then.
The couple and their 8-month-old daughter, Rilyn, have lost nearly all of their belongings.
Proceeds from tonight’s game and concessions stand are going to the family. People can also bring donations of gift cards, toys and other items.
The game started at 6:30 p.m. Massaponax High School is located at 8201 Jefferson Davis Highway.

The National Anthem was played while people saluted the American flag saved from the house.
School Board members Amanda Blalock, Linda Wieland and Ray Lora are here in the crowd, which continues to grow.
