Community is reaching out to help ‘summertime Santa Claus’

UPDATE: The community has begun responding with offers of help for Richard Foster, a local ice cream truck operator known as the “summertime Santa Claus” who has fallen on hard times as reported on Saturday.

As of mid-July, Foster has been unable to drive his truck to Spotsylvania neighborhoods and community pools because the compressor that kept his frozen treats cold has been broken.

With this as his sole earned income, he has been unable to pay bills and has turned to the food pantry at Christ Church for help.

Christ Church, an Episcopal congregation in Spotsylvania Courthouse, has offered to be a point of contact for anyone wanting to help Mr. Foster.  The church is located 8951 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553. The telephone number is 540/582-5033.

I’m gathering details on the offers of help. Check back for updates.
