Veterans plan to address School Board tonight over respect for American flag
Military veterans tell me they plan to attend tonight’s Spotsylvania School Board meeting to express their concerns over the recent display of a tattered American flag at a high school football game and students’ lack of knowledge regarding proper respect for the flag.
One veteran just told me he doesn’t hold the teen responsible who was waving that flag at a Chancellor-Riverbend game last month. He doesn’t believe he or other students knew better.
That’s why he plans to attend the meeting tonight to urge the School Board to begin including instruction on proper flag etiquette in the school curriculum.
That veteran said he asked about five years ago during the tenure of Superintendent Jerry Hill but was told the state’s Standards of Learning requirements didn’t allow time for that instruction.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30. Meetings are held at the School Board administration building, 8020 River Stone Drive across from Massaponax High School.
