Lora challenges others to camp out for homeless event
UPDATE: At least five of the seven Spotsylvania School Board members have committed to attending at least a portion of the Camp Out, Rock Out, Knock Out Homelessness event.
The challenge has been issued.
Spotsylvania School Board member Ray Lora is the only public official who has registered thus far to camp out for the county’s homeless children at Massaponax High School on Sept. 8, organizer and school social worker Michelle Patton just told me.
“That’s embarrassing,” Lora said upon finding out.
He then called on his School Board colleagues and others to join him.
“They’ve got to walk the talk,” he said.
The school division is gearing up for its second ”Camp Out, Rock Out, Knock Out Homelessness” event. It runs for a 24-hour period starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, and will be held on the grounds of Massaponax High School.
Lora has registered to spend the full 24 hours in a tent as he did in the event’s first year.
Schools Superintendent Scott Baker will be there to kick off the festivities that will include music and games for all members of the family.
This year’s event has added a children’s fun run.
People can drop off donations for the homeless students and their families at Massaponax High School or at the Wal-Mart at Southpoint between 10 a.m. on Sept. 8 and 10 a.m. on Sept. 9.
Items that are needed include:

- crock pots
- non-perishable food
- school supplies
- undergarments for all ages
- socks for all ages
- laundry soap
- body wash/soap
- feminine hygiene products
