Spotsy schools hosting homelessness awareness event
UPDATE: I have a story on student homelessness online now and in today’s paper.
The Spotsylvania County school division is holding a community-wide event to raise awareness of homelessness this weekend.
The event starts at 5 p.m. Friday and runs for 24 hours, during which time school staff and local leaders are expected to spend time in a box to learn what it’s like to sleep and eat without a home.
The event will be held in the parking lot of the Walmart at 10001 Southpoint Parkway. Music from local artists and bands is planned.
The community is encouraged to bring items needed by homeless families such as non-perishable food, new clothing, socks, undergarments, school supplies and toiletries such as deodorant, shampoo, soap and tooth brushes.
A school bus will be there to load with donated items.
The school division is encouraging the community to take part in its effort to “knock out homelessness.” You can also check out the flyer yourself.
