Germanna closing update

The Dickinson Building suffered significant structural damage, including here, at the entrance. This damage is at a stairwell, posing an obvious safety risk, a structural engineer told me.

Because of “significant structural damage” from the earthquake, the Dickinson Building on the Fredericksburg Area Campus will not be available for use at least through this semester, Germanna Community College President David Sam told me this morning while I toured the campus.

He also told me he won’t decide until early next week when classes will resume at any of Germanna’s campuses. None of the other buildings have had anything but “cosmetic” damage but he said it would cause too much confusion to resume some classes and not all of them.

Staff and students were being escorted into the buildings at each campus today to allow them to retrieve personal belongings.

Online classes are also temporarily suspended.
