Middle schoolers have turned ‘cake bosses’ and neurosurgeons

Spotsylvania’s middle schoolers are taking their skills to new depths this summer.

I visited Freedom Middle School this morning where dozens of students from around the county are taking summer enrichment classes that have them dissecting sheep brains, learning to be cake decorators like those on TLC, and seeing if they have what it takes to be the next big movie star or a Steven Spielberg.

I’ll have a full story on this soon. In the meantime, you can catch a glimpse of the activities.

Mikayla Smith, a rising eighth grader at Battlefield Middle School, hopes to become a doctor. She got to try her surgery skills by dissecting a number of creatures over the past week including a shark, a starfish and the brain of a sheep.

Zachary Cuba, a rising eighth grader at Spotsylvania Middle School, isn’t sure whether it will be his career, but he enrolled in the “cake creations” class because of his interest in baking and cake decorating.
