Let’s celebrate the nation’s freedoms
Several people have approached me after last night’s School Board meeting to express their support for the newspaper’s coverage of the Spotsylvania school division and to question criticism of our coverage by a public official during the meeting.
My response to anyone would be the same so I decided I would share what I replied to a reader this morning who felt we should defend ourselves in some fashion.
Thank you for your comments, and most of all for reading the newspaper and web coverage. While I appreciate your support, I consider criticism of my reporting a part of the job. My goal is to be fair and accurate and to report on what is newsworthy. Not everyone sees things the same way.
People have various options for expressing their opinions. They can contact me directly, call my editor, write a letter to the editor, or make statements publicly. I avidly support the U.S. Constitution, which, among other things, provides for freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
As we prepare to celebrate the nation’s founding on this Fourth of July, we can let this serve as one more reminder of the wisdom of the Founding Fathers.
Thank you again for taking the time to read our coverage and for writing.
