Hill looking to ROP list for cuts

Spotsylvania County School Superintendent Jerry Hill said he’s looking to the Early Retirement Opportunity Program list for making staff cuts for the fiscal 2012 budget, which begins July 1.

He said he is considering not filling some of the top administrative slots on that list. Fourteen people from central office are retiring under the ROP program on June 30, including three assistant superintendents.

It would make sense to not fill the Asst. Supt. slots right away and let the new Supt. decided how to structure there. The other positions would need to be looked at and see how long they can be vacant or if they can be consolidated or if they are urgently needed. I doubt seriously that all of these could be eliminated without putting a lot more work on people who already have a full plate…might be okay for a couple of months, but not all year.
I think it is good to look at this though, rather than cutting positions completely and putting people out of work.
