Chancellor High gym roof remains intact
Spotsylvania County school officials want to dispel rumors about Chancellor High’s gym immediately. The gym roof at Chancellor High has NOT collapsed. However, school officials are currently working to speed the melting of the snow atop the roof to decrease the load on it.
School officials began this week to redouble their efforts to inspect the roofs of gyms and auditoriums, in particular, following the collapse of a gymnasium roof in Blacksburg. Those parts of school buildings are especially vulnerable because of the long structural spans of their roofs.
Assistant Superintendent James Meyer said a structural engineer has inspected the Chancellor High roof and is recommending a chemical be applied to hasten the melting as a precaution. The roof has not yet reached its maximum load but is approaching it. The roof drains have also been inspected to be sure they are clear and capable of handling the melting snow.
The gym roof is being shored up during the process, Meyer said.
School officials are currently consulting the county’s building department and fire marshal to determine what steps to take when county schools reopen, whenever that happens.
The school division expects to be sending parents and staff an email this afternoon providing them updated information on Chancellor High.
