Food News: Early peaches, new restaurants, tiny greens

Local peaches have arrived early this year, thanks to extra-hot temperatures in March and April. Read farmers Emmett Snead’s column about what varieties to look for when in our area here.

The market for organic foods has grown tremendously over the past several years. But that growing popularity has brought many large corporations into the industry, and has caused many new ingredients, even certain pesticides, to be added to the OK list for certified organic standards. This story in The New York Times examines this trend and the reaction from some longtime players in the organic industry.

A chef and restaurant manager takes the plunge in opening his own restaurant in Spotsylvania County — Morsi’s Mediterranean Grill at 10219 Southpoint Parkway. Read more here.

A restaurant that pays homage to heroes from real life and comic books has opened at 560 Celebrate Virginia Parkway off U.S. 17 in Stafford. More information here.

The owners of F.W. Sullivan’s on William Street have two more eateries planned for downtown Fredericksburg. Read more about their plans here.

Benny’s Sub Shop has leased 1,200 square feet of retail space in the King George Gateway shopping center at U.S. 301 and Commerce Drive in the Dahlgren area of King George County.

Local entrepreneur Ryan Bullock is shooting for an early August opening for his new restaurant and space-themed nightclub in downtown Fredericksburg. Digital menus, sushi and an illuminated bartop are among the planned features. Learn more here.

The Virginia Barbeque at 451 Jefferson Davis Highway is under new management. Kenneth Bach, a longtime Fredericksburg resident, has bought the franchise from Tony Greathouse and done a quick renovation. It is expected to reopen this week. More information here.
