Orange to host summer food festival featuring Joel Salatin, others
Downtown Orange is planning a festival this August that offers something for foodies, home gardeners, farmers and many more. The Orange Downtown Alliance is working with edible Blue Ridge magazine to host the edible Food Fest in Orange Aug. 11.
The festival, which will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., will include both children’s and adult activities, food tastings, live music and cooking demonstrations from area chefs.
The festival will also include workshops on sustainable agriculture, organic gardening, soil and composting, seed saving, edible landscaping and more.
The keynote speaker is Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm near Staunton. Salatin and his farm have become almost ubiquitous in documentaries and programs on issues like localizing the food economy and supporting smaller-scale agricultural practices. Also featured during the festival will be Chef Joe Randall, a longtime veteran of the foodservice industry who runs a cooking school in Savannah, Ga.
