As you plan your Thanksgiving menu, remember those in need.
The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank put out a press release last week saying it will take 5,000 turkeys and Thanksgiving fixings to ensure the hungry in our community don’t go without this Thanksgiving.
From the release:
This year, nearly 15,000 people across the Fredericksburg region are receiving food each month through the food bank’s network of 74 food pantries and food assistance organizations. The need has remained steady this year. Oya Oliver, Executive Director of the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank says, “Our partners report that more people are showing up at their doors asking for food for the first time. We live in a part of the country where the cost of living is creeping higher and higher. On any given day, there are thousands of people in our community worrying about how they will feed their families. As a food bank, we and our members rely on our generous community to make sure that they will not go hungry.”
So while you’re shopping for food for your family’s table this year, why not add a little extra to your cart to take to the Food Bank? Donations can be taken to the food bank’s warehouse located at 3631 Lee Hill Drive, Fredericksburg, VA. The food bank is open to accept donations Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesday until 6 p.m. You can find information on Saturday hours here. Monetary donations are also accepted and may be used to purchase additional turkeys.
If you want another option for giving, on Nov. 19 and 20, Spotsylvania Towne Centre will hold a blood drive. If you give a pint of blood at that drive, Bloom will donate a turkey to the food bank. Find details here.
