Holiday traditions

Hello! The Fredericksburg Families blog was on a little hiatus, but we’re getting it up and running again. I will be posting here frequently, so I wanted to introduce myself–and my family, since that’s the theme of the blog.

I’m Amy Umble, and I cover education and social services for The Free Lance-Star. I’ll also be writing about religion and family issues from time to time. When I’m not reporting, I’m very busy raising three children–two teenage boys and a brand-new little girl. I’m sure you’ll hear a lot about them in this blog, even though I try very hard not to be that mom, the one who can’t shut up about her kids. But I want to hear about your kids and your families. I hope that through this blog, we can start a conversation. I hope that leads to some interesting stories–stories about the things that are on your minds, and in your life.

The holidays have been on my mind a lot these past few days. I’ve been thinking that we have a pretty unique opportunity to look back on our family traditions and see what has worked and what hasn’t, now that we’re going to start this whole childhood thing all over again. I’ve been wanting to add some more traditions and have been stalking other families, trying to see what they do. One that I’ve decided to add to our lineup this year: a Christmas Eve present of pajamas and a book. My sons aren’t so thrilled, but I think my younger teen will be pretty happy with the book on baseball statistics that I bought him. His favorite movie is “Moneyball,” and I was pretty pleased to be able to think of a way to make this new tradition work even though he’s no a big reader.

We’re also going to continue with our family’s most-loved tradition: the annual cookie-decorating party. My cousin bakes dozens of sugar cookies, and everyone descends on her house to eat lunch and frost the cookies. Each year, it seems that things get more and more stressful, and I worry that this will be the year we’re too maxed out for the party. But I just got my invite, so I know we’ll be frosting some cookies in a few weeks.
