Happy New (School) Year’s Day
Today is the first day of school for Fredericksburg, Colonial Beach, Stafford, Caroline, King George and Westmoreland schools. Orange County schools have pushed back the first day to Sept. 12 as they continue to make repairs from the Aug. 15 earthquake. Louisa County schools, also recovering from earthquake damage, plan to resume classes on the 12th as well.
Education reporter Jeff Branscome has a light-hearted look at the hopes and wishes associated with the start of the 2011-12 school year, including some of the truest words ever spoken about middle school, from Gayle Middle School sixth-grader Taylor Armstrong:
“Everyone’s not what they seem like,” said Taylor, 11. “On the outside, they’ll be, ‘Oh, how you doing’ and then they rip your heart out!”
Taylor wisely plans to focus on her classes–don’t worry, all that drama will subside at some point in college.
The start of the school year can be like a second chance for New Years’ Resolutions. Whether it’s re-focusing at your job, starting a fitness regimen, pledging to put healthier food on the table or tackling projects around the house, parents can harness the start of a new school year, too.
Look for resources here later this week to help get you going in a few of these areas, and in the meantime, feel free to share with us:
