Happy extra day of summer.
Who would have thought an earthquake would knock out the first day of school in our area? Schools officials in Spotsylvania and Culpeper counties delayed the start of school as a result of yesterday’s quake. You can find our closings page here.
So many kids and parents in our area are finding themselves with an extra day of summer. Whether you’re cursing or praising this event, here are a few resources to make the best of it:
- Get inspired by this informal survey from the beginning of this year’s summer break of area elementary students on what their ideal summer vacation would include. There are some far-fetched ideas here, but also some very achievable ones, like “I would play tag with my mom.”
- Here‘s a smattering of summer songs composed a few years ago by area elementary students. Maybe compose some rhymes with your own kids about what happened yesterday.
- Extend your summer reading list. The Central Rappahannock Regional Library reports that all branches are open normal hours today, after closing early yesterday.
- Thank goodness for good weather. It’s expected to be sunny and in the high 80s today. Get out to an area park with a picnic if you can.
What are you doing with this “extra day of summer?”
