Cobblestone Children’s Museum receives grants to continue traveling exhibits
You may have seen them at Picnic in the Park earlier this summer, or at the Family Table festival a couple weekends ago in Hurkamp Park. The Cobblestone Children’s Museum is still working toward its eventual goal of establishing a children’s museum in the Fredericksburg area, with traveling, hands-on exhibits for kids at a number of area events. You can learn more about the museum here. Read our story about this effort here.
Here’s some recent news on grants the group has received to continue its work.
Cobblestone Children’s Museum (CCM) was awarded a sponsorship and two grants to continue to build the “Museum on the Go” program and traveling exhibits. CCM received $4,000 from Mary Washington Healthcare (MWH) to develop the “Farm to Table” traveling exhibit. This is a play based exhibit designed to teach children the origin of their food, how it is grown and to encourage healthy eating and nutrition.
CCM also received a $5,000 JumpStart! Grant from the Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority. The Economic Development Authority provides financial incentives to assist new and existing businesses in the City of Fredericksburg in order to foster and stimulate development. CCM plans to use these funds to purchase an enclosed box trailer. This utility trailer will allow the “Museum on the Go” program to transport portable, educational and interactive traveling exhibits.
CCM will receive a $3,500 Financial Assistance Grant in the spring of 2012 from the Fredericksburg Area Service League (FASL). FASL is an organization dedicated to helping children in Fredericksburg and its surrounding counties through financial and volunteer support. CCM will use these funds to create the “Ready, Set, Roll” traveling exhibit. This exhibit will focus on velocity, gravity, acceleration and friction in playful experimentation with golf balls.
CCM was also chosen as a placement for FASL for the 2011-2012 year. The members of FASL will volunteer to assist CCM at local children’s events throughout the year.
These grants and partnerships bring CCM a step closer to making the museum a reality for the Fredericksburg region. CCM is a nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire interactive learning and creativity in children and adults through moments of shared discovery. CCM’s vision is to establish a permanent children’s museum in the Fredericksburg area that will provide a safe, challenging and stimulating environment where all children can direct their own learning experiences.
