Bee a good sport for a cause

PARTICIPATE OR WATCH OTHERS DURING THE FEB. 27 SPOTSYLVANIA LIONS CLUB ADULT SPELLING BEE

By MICHAEL ZITZ

THE FREE LANCE-STAR

“Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.”

“Um, could you use that in a sentence, please?”

The Spotsylvania Lions Club will host an Adult Spelling Bee at the Fredericksburg Country Club at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27.

Three-person teams from local schools, colleges, businesses and community organizations will compete.

Will educators, businesspeople and leaders be able to stand up to the pressure as well as 9-year-olds do?

Will making trips to the event’s cash bar early and often help contestants cope with that kind of pressure? It seems likely that the crowd will razz those who don’t. There could even be a buzz.

Misspelling a word—let’s say “potato”—could prove more traumatic in the long term for a bombastic leader than a shy grade-schooler.

In addition to providing moral support to their own teams, cheerleaders may use creative means to try to psych out opposing teams.

No, this is not your third-grade spelling bee. Free Lance–Star Publisher Emeritus Josiah P. Rowe will be honored for his longtime support of spelling bees for local schoolchildren. Among the judges will be philanthropist Doris Buffett.

The event is a fundraiser for the Spotsylvania Lions Club. All proceeds will support scholarships for students at Germanna Community College.

To participate, each spelling team pays a tax-deductible entry fee of $120. In addition, corporate sponsorships are available.

Bob Hagan will serve as emcee. There will be awards for the best spellers, the most creative spellers and the most energizing/annoying “swarms.”

Entry forms for spelling bee teams, bee sponsors, and cheering “swarms” are available online at e-clubhouse.org/sites/spotsylvania and at the UPS Store at 2215 Plank Road in Fredericksburg.

Team entry fees are $120, three-person cheering “swarm” entry fees are $75 and individual tickets are $25.

For more information, please email Spotsylvania Lions Club President Ann Woolford at awoolford.singh@gmail.com or call 540/656-0098 or 757/647-0519. It’s for a good cause, so do bee a good sport and don’t bee shy. The bar opens at 6:30.
