Spring Fling Family Dance planned at Stafford County YMCA

The folks at the Massad YMCA believe that you are never too young—or too old—to go to a prom and, in accord with that saying, they are hosting the third annual Spring Fling Family Dance this Saturday.

The event provides an opportunity for parents, children and grandparents to step out in their finest and join together in an evening of dancing, games, prizes and refreshments in an enchanting atmosphere with spring decorations. A professional photographer will be on-site to capture the magic of the moment for families.

A special treat this year will be an “ice cream social station,” where guests can create their own sundaes, and dances will include a Cupid Shuffle and the limbo. A game that is sure to draw plenty of cheers and excitement is the Circle Hoop, in which parents and children will compete to pass a hula hoop around a circle of players whose hands are linked.

“At a time when families are so busy and even down-time is focused on the television, computer or smartphone, this is a great opportunity to bring people together to enjoy some good, classic, family fun,” said Leslie Rivellese, who is coordinating the event. “The little girls love to twirl on the dance floor with their sparkling dresses, and one unforgettable and heartwarming image is of a father–daughter couple who attended our first dance, with the dad in full military uniform.”

The Spring Fling’s title sponsor, Lewis Insurance Associates, is joined by a host of community businesses who are providing refreshments and donating items for prize drawings that will be announced throughout the evening. Each child will receive a goody bag containing coupons, a water park pass and a special glow-in-the-dark accessory.

Proceeds from the Spring Fling will go to the Jay Massad Support fund, which enables families who are in financial need to participate in the YMCA’s programs and activities.

Collette Caprara is a local writer and artist.
