Holiday Helping: Homeless students in Spotsy schools

HOLIDAY HELPING: See more opportunities to help out for the holidays.

Winter break is coming. And while 14 days without school may sound like a Christmas present for some students, those days bring rumbling stomachs for hundreds of homeless students.

There are more than 540 homeless students in Spotsylvania County, and they get free breakfast and lunch during school days. But not during break.

So school social workers are collecting food–and presents–for those students, many of whom live in motels.

They are collecting cereal, canned pasta, macaroni and cheese (especially those that come in microwaveable cups), peanut butter, jelly, snacks and more. Drop off donations at the Spotsylvania School Board office or email

And you can also help these homeless students by donating deodorant, toilet paper, laundry detergent, socks and underwear (in all sizes) and new coats. Drop off these donations to the Treasure House, which is behind Massaponax High School.

For more details, email Michelle Patton Swisher at the above email or call her at 540/834-2500, ext. 1030.
