Holiday Helping: Let’s talk turkey

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. I don’t know about you, but my mouth is already watering thinking about the traditional recipes my parents make every year.

But for many area families, Thanksgiving doesn’t seem likely. Hunger relief agencies are scrambling to keep up with the need.

If you could spare a turkey–or a few trimmings–here are some places to donate those goodies:

The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank: Drop off donations to: 3631 Lee Hill Drive, Fredericksburg VA 22408, Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month, 9 a.m. to noon. Call 540/371-7666 for details.

The Stafford Hope Center needs 40 turkeys for Thanksgiving–and they could use the trimmings, too, as the annual Thanksgiving meal boxes deplete the food pantry’s stock.Mail checks or drop off donations at 32 Bells Hill Rd in Stafford or click here to donate money online.

SERVE, a Stafford-based relief organization, also needs turkeys and other food for holiday meals. Drop off donations to 15 Upton Lane in Stafford or call 540/288-9603.

At this time of year, the demand for food is high. So if you have a favorite food pantry, check in with them to see what they might need. And, of course, every organization that is trying to feed the hungry welcomes money to help with those grocery bills.
