Election distractions: Hurricane relief, adoption

Looking for a little distraction from the election? My day started with three calls from political parties, and then evolved into stopping by five precincts to get updates. So here are two pieces of non-election news that you may find refreshing:

1. Lifepoint Church in Spostsylvania sent volunteers and supplies to Staten Island to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. The volunteers and supplies arrived today, as you can see in this video.

2. Bethany Christian Services will host a Fredericksburg Fellowship Dinner for area residents considering adoption. Guest speakers will be the Dennehy family, who were recently featured on an Australian TV news show. You can catch some of the coverage here(warning: you will probably cry).

Mike and Sharon Dennehy have adopted nine children from six countries, and they will share the challenges and joys of adoption. The family has has an exciting summer as son George, adopted from Romania, was recently invited to perform with The Goo Goo Dolls. Look for a story in The Free Lance-Star later this week.

The adoption event will be held Friday, Nov. 9, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Fairview at River Club; 10835 Tidewater Trail in Spotsylvania. You can register here.
