Holiday Help: Operation Christmas Child

The holidays are fast approaching, and many people need help this season. Want to reach out? For this month, the Doing Good blog will feature an opportunity each day. Looking for a comprehensive list? Check out the Rappahannock United Way’s holiday opportunities guide.

This week is the national collection week for Operation Christmas Child,an international project which sends shoe box gifts this year to more than 8.5 million children in 100 countries suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, famine and poverty.

Here are some local places where you can drop off contributions, today through next Monday. Bring shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items, hard candy and a letter of encouragement.  Step-by-step shoe box packing instructions are available at

Operation Christmas Child uses tracking technology that allows donors to “follow your box” to the destination country where it will be hand-delivered to a child in need.  To register shoe box gifts and find out what country they are delivered to, use the EZ Give donation form found at

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of international relief and Christian evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham, has delivered more than 77 million gift-filled shoe boxes to needy children in some 130 countries.
