Capitals Place Jack Hillen On Injured Reserve; Recall Tomas Kundratek

ARLINGTON – The Washington Capitals have placed defenseman Jack Hillen on injured reserve and recalled Tomas Kundratek from Hershey to take his place.
Hillen appeared to sustain a left shoulder injury with 11:40 left in the second period, but head coach Adam Oates would classify it only as an “upper-body injury.”
Kundratek, who played five games with the Capitals last season, had 13 goals and 13 assists in 41 games with the Bears and was chosen over Cam Schilling, who was in training camp last week, because he is right-handed.
“Definitely I was really surprised,” said Kundratek, who was selected to play in the AHL all-star game in Providence, R.I. next Monday. “I was working hard and I was really happy about it.”
Oates had seven defensemen active for Saturday’s opener at Tampa Bay, a 6-3 loss, but said he did so only for conditioning reasons. He hinted that would likely not be the case for the Capitals’ home opener against Winnipeg on Tuesday.
