NATIONALS: Five Players Earn MVP Votes; Giants’ Buster Posey Wins
While San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player on Thursday, five players on the Washington Nationals earned at least one vote – including first baseman Adam LaRoche, who finished seventh in the balloting.
LaRoche hit .271 with 33 home runs and 100 RBI for the Nationals, who went 98-64 to finish with the best record in the major leagues. He finished tied with New York Mets third baseman David Wright with 86 points in a weighted scoring system and appeared as high as fifth on the ballots of six members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
Shortstop Ian Desmond, starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and center fielder Bryce Harper also appeared on voters’ ballots. Desmond finished 17th with 15 points; Gonzalez and Zimmerman each earned one fifth-place vote, while one voter put Harper ninth.
