CAPITALS: Rangers Coach John Tortorella Named Jack Adams Finalist
NEW YORK – New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella was named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award on Monday, hours before his team will face the Washington Capitals in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
Tortorella was honored alongside Ottawa’s Paul MacLean and St. Louis’ Ken Hitchcock, who replaced Davis Payne on Nov. 6 and led the Blues to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards Show on June 20 from Las Vegas.
Tortorella won the award after the 2003-04 season, in which he led Tampa Bay to the Stanley Cup, and is in his fourth season with the Rangers. The team captured the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs after finishing 51-24-7 for 109 points and just narrowly missing out on winning the Presidents’ Trophy to Vancouver.
“I think it’s a great honor for him,” said center Brad Richards. “He’s been trying to work with this organization the last three years and build something. The 51 wins this year – it’s just a testament to the organization and how the players bought in.”
