Traffic accident knocks out power to Central Park
On Saturday afternoon around 3:30, two teenage boys who were “horsing around” while driving on Idlewild Boulevard ended up crashing their cars and killing the power to most of Central Park, Cowan Boulevard, and stretches of Plank Road from Westwood into Spotsylvania County.
One of the juveniles was driving a Nissan sedan and the second juvenile was operating a pickup with two teenage passengers. The two drivers, friends who both live in the area, were reportedly driving side by side on Idlewild Boulevard when each lost control of his vehicle and ran off opposite sides of the road. The pickup completely flipped over at least once, while the Nissan struck a light pole and ended up in the roadside ditch. The impact into the pole caused an electrical short which resulted in widespread power outages on both sides of Plank Road.
Representatives from Dominion Virginia Power responded within thirty minutes but the electricity was affected in some locations for as long as an hour and a half. Police officers manually controlled the most critical intersections since the traffic lights were dark or on flash in the heavily traveled retail corridor around Central Park and Spotsylvania Towne Center.
Fortunately, none of the occupants of either vehicle suffered more than scrapes, bumps and bruises, and all were turned over to parents who were called to the scene. Both vehicles had significant damage and had to be towed away.
Both drivers were charged with reckless driving.
