Line of Duty deaths rise in 2011
“According to preliminary data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 173 officers have been killed during 2011 — up 13 percent from 153 line-of-duty deaths in 2010.” Read the full preliminary report here.
Continuing a recent disturbing trend, there was a 15% increase over the past year in the number of law enforcement officers killed by gunfire. Sixty-eight officers were shot and killed during 2011, up from 59 killed by firearms in 2010. This is the first year since 1997 that gunfire fatalities among law enforcement officers outnumbered motor vehicle accident fatalities.
Of those killed by gunfire, 14 were shot while making an arrest, 9 died while handling domestic violence calls for service, and 9 while investigating a suspicious person or circumstance.
