Police Investigate Homicide, Suspect in Custody

Police responded to the 1900 block of Charles Street at 11:20 pm on October 11 for reports of a loud disturbance in the street.  Officers arrived within minutes and found a male subject collapsed next to a parked car.  The victim had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene.  The victim was identified as Jermaine Samuel, 33, whose last known address was the Colonial Motel in Fredericksburg.

Multiple law enforcement officers from Fredericksburg and surrounding jurisdictions and troopers from the Virginia State Police responded to the area to search for the suspect, secure the crime scene, and interview witnesses.  Witnesses were able to provide a description of the assailant, and approximately ten minutes after the first 911 call, a young male matching the suspect description was located and detained in the Fredericksburg Shopping Center in the 500 block of Jefferson Davis Highway.  With assistance from a Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office K9 unit, a weapon was recovered early this morning near the crime scene.

Justin Brunell, 20, of Fredericksburg was subsequently arrested and charged with first degree murder.   Brunell is incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

It has been determined that the victim and suspect were involved in a dispute over illegal narcotics and it was this dispute that led to last night’s fatal incident.

This investigation is active and ongoing.  Anyone with information concerning this crime should contact Detective Carlos Reyes at 540-654-5919.
