Earthquake updates

UPDATE 4:30 pm.  Building and Development Services, the Department of Public Works, and the Fire Department are coordinating to check on buildings with reported damage.  All information on structural damage must be forwarded to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

If you need to report non-emergency damage to a structure, please call B&D at 540-372-1080 until 7:00 pm tonight or after 8:15 am tomorrow morning.  If you believe the structural damage is an emergency, please call 911 immediately.

Emergency crews have so far responded to three reports of possible gas leaks, all of which were cleared with safe readings.

UPDATE 5:00 pm.  The ruptured water main inside Cobblestone Apartments off Lafayette Blvd has largely been repaired.  Crews are on the scene making sure the sprinkler system is back in service but only one resident had to be displaced due to the water damage.

UPDATE 4:15 PM.  Fire Department has cleared the scene of the residential structure fire on Cornell Street.  No reported injuries, and no word yet on whether or not the fire was caused by the quake.

There have been about twenty reports of buildings damaged, primarily in the downtown area.  None of the damage appears to be significant and there are no reports of structures in danger of collapse.  Emergency crews will be checking on these buildings as resources allow.

During the first eight minutes immediately following the earthquake, the 911 Center answered 67 calls on the 911 emergency lines and 74 calls on the administrative lines.

The 911 Center is still extremely busy, so please do not call unless you have an emergency or need to report structural damage.  Since cell phone service is still mostly cut off due to the high volume of calls, we have been receiving a lot of requests to check on loved ones who live in Fredericksburg.  Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower available to perform this service!   At this time we are not aware of any injuries caused by this event.
