A new deadline approaches for Fredericksburg baseball

Hagerstown_Suns_Cap_LogoThe countdown begins again today for a decision on professional baseball in Fredericksburg.

The mayor and city manager began meeting this morning with representatives from Diamond Nation, who were on hand yesterday at the City Council’s work session and regular meeting.

Today is to be the beginning of additional negotiations to see whether a better financial deal can be found for the project. Right now, the elephant in the room is $18 million in costs for the facility that will include a multi-purpose stadium with 4,750 fixed seats that would serve as the home stadium for Minor League Baseball’s Hagerstown Suns.

The Suns want the stadium ready for opening day of the 2016 season.

The facility would also include a training facility and five artificial turf fields for Diamond Nation, which would host training and tournaments for amateur baseball and softball for about nine months of the year. Diamond Nation operates such a facility in Flemington, N.J.

A report is due back to the council at its next meeting in two weeks.

As I reported last night, Jack Cust, managing partner of Diamond Nation, said that facility hosts about 500,000 visitors each year. Those visitors come from across 42 states.

He estimates at least that number of visitors to Fredericksburg when the facility opens – if it opens. He also projected $51 million in spending from those visitors.

Today, we are running another poll on the project. Feel free to weigh in.
