UPDATE: The Red Cross tells us that they have worked with families from four of the units and eight family members have received assistance. They will have a team at the complex today.

The Fredericksburg Fire Department responded to a fire in an apartment in the Kendalwood apartment complex in the city early Monday.

The call came in at about 2 a.m. and damaged several apartments on 205 Kings Mill Court, off U.S. 1, said Fredericksburg Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike Jones.

The apartment building has two stories in the front and three in the back and is built into the hillside, he said. The fire was in the apartment on the second level on the right hand side and spread throughout the living room and balcony.

The occupants of the apartment were home and no one was injured, Jones said. The fire department rescued a cat from the apartment.

Jones said there are five apartments on that side of the building and some were damaged by smoke, heat and water.

He said the cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

Fire units spent about three hours on the scene.

The residents of three apartments in the building where the fire was are currently displaced, but did not need assistance from The Red Cross, Jones said.
