Fredericksburg treasurer grants extension to baseball stadium investors

Hagerstown_Suns_Cap_LogoFredericksburg Treasurer Brenda Wood has granted a 60-day extension to the investors seeking to build a stadium complex in Celebrate Virginia South where the Hagerstown Suns would play.

As I reported earlier this week, the partners seeking to move the Suns to Fredericksburg wanted an extension of their Wednesday (June 18) deadline.

The partners are seeking to finalize the purchase of 38 acres in Celebrate Virginia South where former Gov. Doug Wilder had planned to build the U.S. National Slavery Museum.

Because the museum organization had not been paying its real estate taxes, the  Treasurer’s Office was in the process of selling the property to recover lost taxes,  interest and penalties. It paused the tax sale in October when the baseball investors signed a contract with the museum organization to buy the land.

The investors are continuing to work out details that will include a roughly 5,000-seat stadium and facilities for Diamond Nation, which operates amateur tournaments, camps and clinics for softball and baseball.
