FLS reporter hired by Fredericksburg for its economic development staff
Bill Freehling, a reporter for The Free Lance-Star and editor of the popular Fredericksburg Business Insider newsletter, has been hired by the city of Fredericksburg as its assistant director for economic development. He will begin his new job on June 9.
Freehling spent the past decade at the newspaper covering education, then police and the courts, and finally, business.
“I think this a great hire for the city,” said Karen Hedelt, Fredericksburg’s director of economic development and tourism. She said she had recently sensed Freehling’s increasing interest in taking a more active role in the community’s growth and prosperity.
City Manager Bev Cameron said he notified the City Council of the hire earlier this week and had received several positive acknowledgements regarding the selection.
Cameron rattled off a list of reasons why Freehling will be a benefit to the city’s economic development efforts.
“He’s bright. He’s hard-working. He’s well-educated. He’s committed to this community. He knows the business community very well. He knows the movers and shakers in the region and he will be a great addition to the city,” Cameron said. “I wish he could start tomorrow.”
The position had been vacant since January. The City Council had discussed the position and the department during budget deliberations but recently gave Cameron authority to fill it.
