Voter turnout low for Fredericksburg ward races

I’m just back from a lunch-time visit to the three polling places for today’s contested races. At each precinct in Wards 3 and 4, election officials said turnout was low.

But all of the candidates were there to greet folks as they arrived.

Two political newcomers are vying for the Ward 3 seat: Tim Duffy and Richard Friesner.

Ward 3 candidate Tim Duffy speaks with voter Barbara Studer outside of the Walker-Grant Middle School polling place. Duffy is an assistant principal at the school.

Voting for that ward is held at the Walker-Grant Middle School. There, as of noon-time 193 of the precinct’s 3,703 registered voters had cast a ballot.

Ward 3 candidate Richard Friesner chose to focus on one of his most well-known attributes by putting his trademark dark-framed glasses on his campaign signs and his campaign table. To his right is School Board incumbent Jannan Holmes.

Ward 4 is split over two precincts.

At New City Fellowship Church, both incumbent Bea Paolucci and challenger Charlie “Chuck” Frye Jr. were out front to greet people as they arrived to vote.

At that precinct, 196 of the 2,339 registered voters had cast a ballot by 12:33 p.m.

Ward 4 challenger Charlie "Chuck" Frye Jr. chats with his son, Charlie Frye III, as they wait to speak with voters. His son said he's decided to call himself CFIII.

In the other precinct, at VFW Post 3103, 74 of the 1,666 people registered had voted by 1 p.m.

Polls remain open until 7 p.m.

All of the School Board incumbents are running unopposed.

Ward 1 Councilman Brad Ellis is running unopposed. Billy Withers is running unopposed to rejoin the council in Ward 2.
