Hagerstown council approves lease extension for Suns

Hagerstown_Suns_Cap_LogoThe Herald-Mail in Hagerstown reports today that the Hagerstown City Council approved a 2-year extension of  the lease for the Hagerstown Suns.

The lease now runs through December 2016.

The Suns, a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, plan to move to Fredericksburg but are still working to  finalize plans to build a privately funded stadium.

Owners of the Suns are teaming with New Jersey-based Diamond Nation to build a facility that will serve as home for the minor league baseball team and be a site for amateur baseball and softball training and tournaments.

Until it is built, the Suns need a stadium for their home games.

The plan in Fredericksburg is to build on the 38-acre site in Celebrate Virginia South where former Gov. Doug Wilder had once planned to build his U.S. National Slavery Museum.

Suns representatives had hoped to be ready to play here by the 2015 season but that looks unlikely, given the time needed for construction.
