Fredericksburg residents Anne and Carl Little were recognized this morning for their efforts in beautifying the city.

The recognition came during the city’s annual Arbor Day celebration, said Dave King, assistant director of public works.

The couple founded Tree Fredericksburg, which has been responsible for planting more than 3,500 trees since its inception in 2008, King said. The city pays for the trees, stakes and mulch but the couple coordinates planting by volunteers.

As part of the couple’s recognition, a Princeton Elm was planted in their honor in the mall area of Washington Avenue across from Historic Kenmore.

Anne Little also chairs the city’s Clean and Green Commission and its Green Committee.

In 2012, Anne Little won $10,000 for her work with Tree Fredericksburg in a contest sponsored by Cox Communications and The Trust for Public Land. She gave that money to purchase city trees.
