Fredericksburg council backs raises for city staff

The Fredericksburg City Council Tuesday night expressed support for a cost-of-living increase for city employees in the coming year.

City Manager Bev Cameron showed them the cost of a 2-percent and 1-percent COLA for the full year and for a half year. Everyone said they support a full-year COLA. The question remaining is the percentage they will support.

Councilman Brad Ellis said he supports the 2-percent COLA as does Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw. Council members Bea Paolucci, Fred Howe and George Solley said they support that, too, if the rest of the budget will support it.

Councilman Matt Kelly said he would wait to see the rest of the budget deliberations before deciding what percentage he supports.

City school employees are all scheduled to get raises – anywhere from 1 to 15 percent, Cameron said. The variation is because of how the increases are being handled. Superintendent David Melton is planning to adjust the entire salary scale to make the city more competitive with salaries in neighboring Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.
