Wood wins tight treasurer’s race; Higgs reelected sheriff

Brenda A. Wood was elected the city’s next treasurer in a tight race.

Wood received 52.6 percent of the vote to Rita Girard’s 47.4 percent, according to unofficial results posted by the city registrar’s office.

Girard had more votes than Wood in Ward 2. There she captured 815 votes to 722 for Wood, according to unofficial results.

Sheriff Paul W. Higgs has won reelection, taking about 70 percent of the vote. He was challenged by Ron A. Swaney of the Fredericksburg Police Department.

Here are the details of the results in both races.


Brenda A. Wood 2,899 votes or 52.6 percent

Rita E. Girard, 2,612 votes or 47.4 percent

Total votes: 5,511


Paul W. Higgs, 4,959 votes, 76.02 percent

Ron A. Swaney, 1,536 votes, 23.55 percent

Write-in candidates, 28 votes, 0.43 percent

Total: 6,523
