City social services department hosting adoption celebration
The Fredericksburg Department of Social Services will host an adoption celebration event on Nov. 23.
Below are the details provided by DSS.
In celebration of National Adoption Month, the Fredericksburg Best Court Practice Team will hold its annual Adoption Celebration event on Saturday, Nov. 23rd. The Fredericksburg Best Court Practice team includes Juvenile Domestic Relations Judge David Peterson, the Clerk of Court, representatives from the Fredericksburg Department of Social Services, Rappahannock Area Court Appointed Special Advocates, Germanna Community College, and local attorneys.
This year, the team is excited to be partnering with Children’s Home Society of Virginia on the event which will begin at the Fredericksburg Circuit Court where Judge Willis and Judge Peterson will recognize all adoptions finalized in the last year. Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw will make the keynote presentation and then the families will be transported by the Fredericksburg Trolley to the Fredericksburg Baptist church for lunch and a magic show by the Amazing Kevin.
Each year, the Department of Social Services and child-placing agencies work tirelessly to find “Forever Homes” for children in foster care. In Fredericksburg, 43 children, on average, are in foster care. While the initial goal is always to reunite children with their biological families, when that is not possible, adoption provides these children with what all children deserve: a safe and happy home forever. This year, the Fredericksburg Department of Social Services has finalized eight adoptions and will finalize its ninth on Nov. 23.
This celebration would not be possible without the generous support of our community merchants, Fredericksburg Baptist Church, the JDR Court clerks, Children’s Home Society of Virginia, and the Fredericksburg DSS staff.
