School superintendent and board member attending council meeting

Fredericksburg Schools Superintendent David Melton is attending Tuesday’s City Council meeting to provide council an update on the division’s progress for this school year. School Board member Jannan Holmes accompanied Melton to the meeting.

Dr. Melton announced that the division has about 50 more students enrolled this year than at the same time last year. However, he said that the division had hired additional staff to be ready for that.

He said work on the 10,800-square-foot addition to Hugh Mercer Elementary is about eight days behind because of recent rains but that on Monday and Tuesday, workers poured a cement slab for the addition.

Melton also reminded council that of 136 school divisions in the state, just 36 were judged as fully accredited for this year and that Fredericksburg’s division is one of the 36.
