Segment of College Avenue will be closed in both directions Thursday to Friday
College Avenue will be closed in both directions between Rowe Street and Payne Street from 7 a.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Friday for utilities work related to construction of the new campus center at the University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg’s Public Works Department announced today.
That segment of road is being closed so contractors can tunnel under the active gas line and water line to install the sanitary line as was planned.
Detours will be in place while the work is under way.
Previously, the city’s Public Works Department reported that the area around College Avenue area will experience detours and one road closure through Oct. 11 while utilities work is under way.
Below are the details released earlier.
The work will block two addresses on College Avenue for short periods during the work. The Catholic Student Center at 1614 College Ave. will be partially blocked for three days beginning Sept. 30. The private home at 1512 College Ave. was to be fully blocked from Monday, Sept. 16 until today.
The city of Fredericksburg agreed to post “No Parking” signs along both sides of College Avenue from Rowe Street to Payne Street during the work period.
UMW has made a map available that depicts the detours.
Southbound traffic toward William Street will be detoured at Rowe Street to Augustine Avenue and back to College Avenue at Payne Street.
Northbound traffic toward U.S. 1 will remain on College Avenue. The intersection of Parcell Street and College Avenue will be closed throughout the work period with resident access from Augustine Avenue.
The detour will end on Oct. 11 but “No Parking” will remain in effect on the UMW side of College Avenue in the construction area until July 2015. Parking on the
other side of College Avenue will be restricted periodically during construction.
Anyone with questions on the construction can check the project website or contact Capital Outlay Project Manager Les Johnson at 540/654-2100 or email@example.com.
