Hagerstown Council shifts majority support to stadium deal
The Hagerstown (Md.) Herald-Mail reports today that the majority of that city’s council now supports working to craft a deal to build a stadium there for the Hagerstown Suns.
That deal has a long way to go as regards financing but it’s a significant shift in that council’s stance.
Hagerstown Councilman Donald F. Munson announced his support for the stadium at a Tuesday meeting, shifting from the stance he took when running for office last year, the paper reported.
He said his change resulted from his view that he saw “little else in the way of large projects that can help re-energize the city’s downtown tax base while retaining the minor league baseball team,” the paper said.
On the same day Suns majority owner Bruce Quinn was meeting with Fredericksburg officials, he was in talks with the mayor and the city administrator of Hagerstown.
Bill Freehling reports that Tuesday’s meeting between Quinn and Fredericksburg City Manager Bev Cameron and Councilman Fred Howe went well.
The group continued its negotiations on a deal to bring the Suns to the Celebrate Virginia South development.
City Council will hear full details of the negotiations during an open work session on Tuesday in City Hall at 5:30 p.m.
