Fredericksburg council overrules ARB decision regarding new Bethem restaurant
Fredericksburg City Council, after a lengthy discussion, voted unanimously to overturn the decision of the Architectural Review Board, which had denied Aby and Blake Bethem a certificate of appropriateness for their new restaurant, Vivify.
The restaurant at 314 William St. cannot open until it has that certificate, because it is required for the restaurant owners to get a certificate of occupancy.
The Bethems were renovating the property in preparation to open a new restaurant. They made a change to the building facade that had not been approved by the ARB and came for approval after the fact. The Bethems had received a certificate of appropriateness for other changes on the front but when that work was being done, problems were discovered with the brick on the front. It is that change, that the Bethems said can’t be reversed, that created the issue.
Several people spoke during the council meeting in support of the Bethems.
All parties agreed the Bethems didn’t willfully try to skirt the approval process.
